A Short History Lesson
The Richmond Rodeo Club originally started out as the Motueka Rodeo Club. In 2003 the name was changed due to a change of both sponsorship and venue.
The first Rodeo was held in 1962 in Doug Lumis' paddocks in the Lower Moutere. From there the club moved to the top of the Takaka hill in 1964 and held a further three Rodeos until the club decided to once again move venue. They moved to Marchwood park in Motueka using the show grounds arena. For the next nine years the club held rodeos in that arena annually with great success and decided to build it's own facility still in Marchwood Park.
At the turn of the new millennium they hired the NZRCA portable rodeo arena and held a trial run in Richmond park. The day went off with great success and so the club decided it was time for them to go on the move again - this time into the city. The Richmond Showgrounds is to be our new venue, bringing the folk of Nelson Bays something new and exciting for many years to come.
With the Club being the only points award Rodeo in the top of the South Island, finding bucking horses was a bit of a problem. The Club started taking on horses from around the region that were proving too rank for people to handle and started up our own string of horses. Currently that string numbers fourteen. We still take on horses and have a loan of five others..
